Saturday we grabbed a quick breakfast before our train to Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan.

The east coast of Taiwan lies between two mountain ranges and is known for fewer people (many of whom belong to indigenous groups) and gorgeous scenery. We started to explore Hualien in a format already familiar to us – walk more than the average person, and find food!

Fresh mochi at a shop near us, Hualien is apparently specifically known for their mochi

We put a few miles in, went into a local mall and got totally overwhelmed by the giant arcade we found in the basement, and explored a supermarket. The weather was cloudy in just the right way, and the mountains surrounding the city were just barely visible.

SO many signs everywhere!!

After a break at the hostel we headed to a local night market, avoided a couple downpours, and finished with dumplings back at our hostel.

Delicious roasted corn
Me with the delicious roasted corn mascot?
Sweet potato balls, another transcendent bite – chewy, sweet, savory

The next day we headed to a National Park!
